Are portable GPS units allowed to be carried on a domestic flight?

    to be on the safe side check it in together with your baggage. unnecessary hassle can ruin your trip. PDA, Laptop, PSPs are allowed but it should only be turned on when the aircraft is already on the air. Cellphones are not allowed to be used while on flight. chinaman

    They are always allowed if you just want to bring them with you.

    If you want to use them during the flight, it depends on the airline. There is no general ban on GPS units, but since they are portable electronic devices, an airline may restrict their use in flight. Most airlines don’t nowadays, outside of take-off and landing. Ask if you’re not sure. Mxsmanic

    I always carry a few GPS with me when I travel and it was never an issue. Some airlines will not allow you to turn the GPS on while in flight, some GPS have game, MP3, video and audio book features like the Garmin Nuvi 850 / 880/s, and you can probably get away with using one of those features to play games with or listen to music or audio books.
    To be sure just ask and if you feel lucky, simply turn your GPS on while in flight and it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

    Sec. 121.306

    [Portable electronic devices.]

    [(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may operate, nor may any operator or pilot in command of an aircraft allow the operation of, any portable electronic device on any U.S.-registered civil aircraft operating under this part.
    (b) Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to–
    (1) Portable voice recorders;
    (2) Hearing aids;
    (3) Heart pacemakers;
    (4) Electric shavers; or
    (5) Any other portable electronic device that the part 119 certificate holder has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used.
    (c) The determination required by paragraph (b)(5) of this section shall be made by that part 119 certificate holder operating the particular device to be used GPS4ME
