I noticed the Nokia 5800 has A-GPS. For many phones, you need an Internet subscription with your network for it to work. I prefer pay-n-go cards. Can the Nokia 5800 use GPS independently, like the GPS systems in cars and such?

Yes, it can just use the steps below-
    >Download latest nokia ovi suite and install it on ur pc,if you have one skip to 3rd step, but make sure its latest.
    >Open ovi suite, connect ur 5800 in pc suite mode.
    >Now go to view–>maps, here select the maps from the list select download.
    >It will be downloaded and uploaded to ur device
    >This feature allows you to use your device as gps device for free of cost, but It does not support turn by turn navigation, you have to pay for this feature.
    >Alternatively you can use Gramin gps applicaton for 5800 and turn your 5800 into full fledged navigation device that can match any standalone gps device.
    >This application is now free by the way you have to buy it, their site- RONIN
