I’m traveling from NC to upstate NY alone and I’m driving by myself because I’m way too scared to fly. Anyway, I’m pretty nervous about driving alone on a 12 hour trip. I want to travel during the night so traffic isn’t so busy on the interstate. Can anyone offer any tips for a woman driving alone for the first time ? I think one of my biggest fears is getting lost. I have already visited a few map sites for directions. I think getting around DC will be the most confusing. I’m also thinking about getting a GPS. Can anyone recommend a good one or do you think it’s a good idea to get one ?
Just wanted to give a big thank you to all of the quick, really great answers !!! I got a lot of good advice and I’m sure other people will benifit from all this advice. Thanks again everyone.

I have a Garmin GPS sytem. It always seems to take me down thousands of back roads to my destination. Is there a way to program it to take the most straightforward interstate route?

How is it that civilians are offered GPS service at no cost? I understand that it is being provided by the government. Is it paid for by tax money which would allow the general public to have access to GPS service? Will it ever be privatized such that companies will start charging consumers to have access to GPS signals?

I’m not sure where to buy a portable gps online. I usually don’t buy stuff online that much, I’ve read a lot about online stores that scam people by charging more money onto their credit cards. So I’m not sure whether or not to buy it online since it’s not really that safe.

You are driving home from work and your GPS suddenly guides you down a side street, where you get caught in a ridiculously busy intersection at Noname Street and Anywhere Place, and then guides you right back the way you were going. What causes this? Give details.
