I’m wondering if in the event of a massive natural disaster or disease pandemic how long would your basic handheld GPS unit still be functional. And also how would this affect cell phones or are they totally separate.

Kiah D asked:

Trying to start a small GIS business on my own… already have the LLC and domain name and what not..have also been networking and possibly have some small contracts potentially lined up. I am trying to focus on things like utility mapping or something, but I could definitely broaden out. What programs, extensions, and GPS instrumentation would it take for me to get started and what do you think the intitial cost would be?

Thanks a ton!

k1mj asked:

I am designing a portable small GPS device and I would like to use a tough scratch resistant material – such as aluminum , titanium alloy or steel – for the main housing. Is it possible to use any of these or I’m better off using ABS.
I would like to if there is any difference in terms of signal reception if I use aluminum titanium alloy or steel ?

How many meters do the GPS satellites wander around?

Barney asked:

The satellites wander around and are stabilized with short “burns” of rocket fuel. How many meters do they wander before the ground station orders them to move? I would also strongly suspect (correct me if I am wrong) that the absolute position can be corrected in software to some extent. but with accuracies on the ground of 5 meters or so, I would think the satellites would have to be pretty stable. Yet on the other hand it’s hard to imagine those things being nailed to the sky.

zuestra99 asked:

From what I understand, Lorentz transformations can determine the dilation of time with relative speed. (Of course I could be wrong). How does the GPS use this to function?
