Where does one get golf course gps information?

Hello,

I am writing a paper on data availability on the internet. Based on all of the Golf GPS devices I have seen, I assumed that this information was freely downloadable somewhere. However, I have been unable to find it.

Is golf course GPS information freely downloadable from somewhere? If so, where? If not, do you think all of these companies are manually re-creating this information? Are they purchasing the data from a common provider? Who would that be?

It seems very bizarre. there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of Golf GPS doo-hickeys. Yet, the data alludes me. Thank you.

I am thinking about getting a range finder for golf . . .
Do you have to get a membership to skycaddie in order to use it for golf courses?

Also, would you consider a laser rangefinder or a Golf GPS better all around?

Whatever your answer, which do you think is the best laser or GPS on the market?

How accurate is it? Does it really come preloaded with all available courses in North America? How easy is it to use? Do you think it’s better than the SkyCaddie GPS units?
