Changing the dash from reg to gps version on my convertible BMW?
I recently bought my car, it was brand new BMW 328i convertible. I didnt get the gps because it was $2000 extra and i didnt think it was worth it. After getting a loaner while i get my car fixed i have changed my mind and want to get it. Anyone have any idea how to get this changed. I want the factory dash and i know it would also require the radio to be changed.

odds are you can take it to bmw and have them install the unit but unfortunately it will likely cost you well over 2000$. Geting this work done anywhere else you are running the risk of having electrical problems.
There is no way you can bake your cake (factory installed gps) and eat it too
(not pay substantially more than the original cost of $2000).
The NAV disc player alone costs from $800. to 1200.
The CID/video display (if not equipped costs a lot too).
Wiring, installation, re-programming, etc. adds a lot.
Changing you car is the other option, but it will also cost you money.
Tsk, tsk. Forget it.
It can be done. It will be expensive.
Your best bet is to get used parts off of a wrecked 3er. Even then it is going to cost far more than $2000.
To give you a general idea of just how hard this is, I’ve included a link of how to retrofit NAV in a X5.
Buy a Nuvi for now and order your next BMW with factory NAV.
Installing an OEM factory GPS nav system may not be the best way to go, it can be done like most have said but the cost is not worth the trouble.
If you did find a wrack unit with a GPS that is still in good, the labor and part to installed the used GPS will be much more than its original cost of the unit.
You may consider an aftermarket portable GPS that will do more than the factory OEM GPS and offer much fresher map data at a much lower cost with much more features.
If you can live with a portable GPS system consider a Garmin Nuvi 880 which has voice command capabilities, hands-free blue-tooth feature, text to speech, traffic service, MSN direct search of lowest price fuel, movie times, stock, weather and more. Also consider the TomTom 930 and the Magellan Maestro 4250.
I can tell you once you purchase or rent a Nuvi 880, you will probably never look at another factory install navigation again.
You should look into possible renting the TomTom GO 930 and or the Magellan Maestro 4250, you will find the price range much more acceptable with much more features than the factory OEM navigation system.
You can rent these Garmin Nuvi 880 / 850 from GPS4Rent or or buy it from Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc
