Do I need internet to use a gps in my car?
I’d like to get a gps for my car, but was wondering if it needs internet connection or if it just operates using satellites? Do I need to purchase anything in addition to the gps itself?

it uses satellites. to load new maps, some require you hook it up to your computer. ask before you buy. Jane
gps works by itself. All it needs are the satellites, which are maintained by the U.S. Gov’t. Krello
No internet required. hattrick
Yes, you have to buy a cable that connects your car to the USB port on your computer in order for it to work. Make sure it’s a long one. James C
GPS units are just plug and go. it does help to plug it into a home computer to update any maps that might be available. this can be done using any usb cord you may have and going to the website. lonfisk
It just uses satellites.
The satellites relay their own position on a signal that your GPS picks up. With three or more satellites your GPS can calculate where it is.
There’s no internet connection involved or needed, the GPS is completely useable by itself without any extra purchases or additional services to pay a monthly fee to. BeingGreenOnline
No, you don’t need an internet connection to use your gps in the car. The gps receives signals from satellites (24 of them are out there circling the earth all the time) and calculates your position on Earth and translates it to the city and street you are currently at.
Most gps comes bundled with gps software and maps for N. America. If your model doesn’t have that then you need to buy separately. Otherwise you don’t anything else.
for additionals services like weather reports, traffic alerts etc you will have to pay. If you don’t opt for them no extra charges at all. guideg
