Do portable GPS navigation systems require installation or do they work right out of the box?

I saw that one store was saying that they work right out of the box, while another was giving installation. Just wondering if the installation is a rip-off or something.

    portable gps work right out the box they were probably installing a head unit with gps

    The portable gps works right out of the box. Both of the stores were talking about two differnt things. You need installation for the built in one, but for the portable one you dont

    i think that installation meant downloading info. into the gps thingy via computer or a sd card not to a head-unit guys,,,
