Molly asked:

As above, but what I mean is if I buy a sim free handset for travelling abroad (I’d buy a sim in Australia…) would I still need to pay for gps or is it different from making a phone call?
Thanks

GPS real time is only available thru subscription different from making phone calls anytime u use you phone to access satellites you pay and not cheap. also the N95 access to satellite is very poor in urban areas the Sat get blocked from view of you phone by tall buildings and real time is very slow

I’m in the uk so don’t know if it’s any different, but I don’t get charged. It does use up data though, but infinite data is included in my price plan. If you don’t mobile internet or similar you may incur data charges.

GPS is a feature of your phone, it uses hardware in your phone to communicate with satellite’s, so nothing to do with your operator, unless you are trying to download new maps for your N95.

Most operators in the UK either charge monthly for the use of the satellite’s, or a one of fee.

I would speak to your operator to see if they support this.
