Beefy asked:

When you update the GPS location on the blackberry, is it connecting to the GPS satellites around the globe or does it have to make some sort of request though the BIS server first?

Your question doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. No GPS receiver connects to the GPS satellites. For users of GPS, communication is one-way only (satellite to receiver).

What I think you’re asking is… does the Blackberry do a unassisted position fix or does it do a network-assisted position fix?

The answer is.. it depends. If the Blackberry has the necessary info to do a quick acquisition of the GPS satellites, then it’ll do a unassisted fix. Otherwise, it’ll get the necessary info it needs from the network and do a network-assisted fix. In both cases, the GPS receiver is still getting data from the GPS satellites that it needs to do the position fix.
