If the batteries are indeed completely dead, then yes, the device may not turn on, even with the car adapter. If it is a water proof unit, like the gamin 205/305 series units, then you will have to send it in for the replacement. The water proof units usually require Garmin them self to replace. I believe this is due to the fact that the gasket that keeps the water out needs to be replaced when its opened.
