Are you referring to a nav system or a hand held unit? I have two Garmins, a hand held that I use for geocaching and a GPS nav system in my car. I am very pleased with both units. I would say that any major brand will provide you good service. My only real advice would be the more channels the unit can handle the more accurate it will read and when buy a unit, make sure it has latest mapping software that company offers. Desert Dust

GPS review for Handheld GPS
Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx (*est. $425)
Best handheld GPS overall.
Reviews say the Garmin GPS GPSMAP 60CSx is the best all-around handheld GPS. The 60CSx gets great scores in reviews for fast map rendering and speedy satellite lock, even from a cold start, due to its SiRFstar III chipset. The rubberized and water-resistant Garmin GPS comes with a 64MB microSD memory card for adding additional maps. North American base maps are preloaded, but reviews say the handheld Garmin GPS really shines when used with optional Garmin MapSource software. The Garmin GPS has a 2.6-inch color screen, an electronic compass, a barometric altimeter, and a special geocaching menu. It weighs 7.5 ounces and runs for about 18 hours on two AA batteries

Best handheld GPS receivers
The Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx handheld GPS (*est. $425) gets the most glowing reviews. Performance is first-rate, according to critics. The Garmin 60CSx uses the SiRFstar III chipset, giving it a fast lock onto satellites — less than 30 seconds from a cold start. In addition to performance, reviewers are impressed with the Garmin handheld GPS unit’s feature lineup. For example, the editors at GPSLodge .com give high marks to the 60CSx for its barometric altimeter and electronic compass (accurate while standing still). Rich Owings at GPSTracklog .com says the Garmin 60CSx is the best handheld GPS unit, praising Garmin’s manufacturing quality and intuitive interfaces.
The Garmin 60CSx handheld GPS is designed to work with Garmin’s excellent MapSource software (multiple versions are available), which includes detailed maps of North American highways, roads, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, backwoods trails and shoreline. The device comes with a 64MB blank SD memory card for adding more maps. The Garmin 60CSx can record up to 10,000 automatic tracking points, and the software lets you transfer routes and waypoints back and forth from your computer to the handheld GPS.

GPS review for Auto GPS review
Garmin nuvi 660 (*est. $675)
Best auto GPS overall.
We found more top ratings for the Garmin nuvi 660 than any other car GPS unit. Experts say it’s extremely accurate and loaded with elegantly implemented features. For example, if you’re using it to play MP3s, it will pause the music to announce travel directions. Features include a big (4.3 inches) bright backlit touchscreen, and an FM transmitter to play MP3s through your car stereo along with Bluetooth. A three-month trial subscription to FM TMC Traffic is included — this service sends live traffic data to your auto GPS. Although the Garmin nuvi 660 is expensive, reviews say that’s about the only drawback.

Best auto GPS receivers
We rarely encounter a product that reviewers say dwarfs the competition as much as the Garmin nuvi 660 auto GPS (*est. $675) . Scott Martin of GPSLodge .com sums up the consensus when he writes, “The Garmin nuvi 660 is a great GPS unit…the best I have used.”
Reviewers note a number of reasons for their infatuation. For example, GPSMagazine .com says that the nuvi 660 auto GPS is “chock-full of features without adding clutter or confusion to the interface.” Even the functionality of the integrated MP3 player is well thought out, pausing the music, announcing the direction, then resuming the music. Scott Martin commends the “great functionality” and small form factor. Rich Owings of GPSTracklog .com likes the “user-friendly design and intuitive interface.” Christian Harris of BIOS magazine likes how the super-bright, white, backlit screen looks great in his car and that the screen is also easily viewable in sunlight. He also raves about GPS reception and features.
Reviewers unanimously agree about the Garmin nuvi 660’s assets and its one major disadvantage — the high price. Features include a bright, backlit touchscreen, an FM transmitter to play MP3s through your car stereo, and Bluetooth. A three-month subscription to FM TMC Traffic is included; after that, one-year renewals are available (*est. $60). TMC stands for Traffic Message Channel — it’s a service that provides real-time traffic alerts for about 50 U.S. markets and is used by the satellite radio networks.
