    Most commercial/consumer GPS receivers communicate to other programs through a serial communication and protocol called NMEA. This is a standard communications protocol used by many navigation-related applications. Its an ASCII format. If you google “NMEA”, you’ll get tons of info about the format of these NMEA sentences.
