I had a similar problem a year ago. In my case, a metal ring on the plug had fallen off in the cigarette lighter socket and shorted out the adapter. Don’t use this gps adapter plug on another car unless you are sure the cable is ok.

Check inside the cigerette lighter socket for loose items that might affect the connection. Then make sure the cigarette lighter still works (if not check the car’s fuse box). If the lighter works, examine the gps cigarette lighter plug for missing or broken parts. If the cigarette lighter works, you probably have a broken or burnt out plug adapter. Generic adapters are available at stores like walmart or you can get an original equipment unit from gps manufacturer.
