No they are not. A chip is for locating you ,the dog owner, in case your pet has gone missing. The local shelters have scanners, that information is sent to the manufactor of the chip who has your contact numbers. A GPS is something else . It would give the location of your dog.

    no

Microchip-If you lose your dog someone will find it and take it to the shelter to see if there is microchip and will scan it and you have your own code/number so you know

GPS- Find where your dog is located

No, they are not the same thing. A Microchip is a small device (the size of a grain of rice) implanted under the skin, usually by your vet. It contains a unique number that identifies your dog and is registered with a company. If your dog is found, shelters and vets scan for a microchip, and contact the microchip company so you can be reunited. It can also serve as proof of ownership should your dog be stolen and located. Cost is usually around $40-$60 for the chip and implantation.

A GPS is a unit mounted on a collar (large-ish box) that transmits your dog’s location so you can track the dog. However, they require that you make sure batteries are charged, plus if someone stole your dog, they can just take the collar off. They are basically only useful for a stray dog if you’ve made sure the batteries are charged and in no other circumstances. They are also expensive.

the only thing will micro chips are, you need a scanner to read them. If a person finds your dog and doesnt bring it to a shelter or veterinarian’s, then you probably wont find your dog. If they make GPS for dogs, i would use that because it doesnt need a scanner.
