lost with a GPS and these are extra words for the guidelines?
has anyone ever noticed that GPS units tell you in writing and on the screen at start up that you are responsible for your activities….this is in response for this story http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20091230/sc_space/lostcouplecantblamegpsairforcesays
what are your thoughts on people using GPS, driving, hiking or anything else,
is there a point where we should give up on people who can’t be saved from themselves and their stupidity?

I don’t get the story, but I absolutely hate it when people blame their GPS for getting them lost. The GPS is just a tool to help you on your way. It isn’t a replacement for instinct and common sense. Just because your GPS tells you to go over a river on a bridge that doesn’t exist anymore doesn’t mean you must do it. I think this is what your link is showing, that the old couple relied on their GPS to get them somewhere, and they got stuck because they only relied on it. smartdude94
You can give people a full set of survival gear but that doesn’t mean they’ll have to common sense to use it correctly. People hurt themselves with tools everyday. People get lost using an conventional compass all the time. You don’t hear these stories on the news because it’s not news. Nor should people who get lost because they don’t know how to use an electronic GPS be news. When I go hiking I have my GPS with me. I also have a compass and a topo map of the area I’ll be in. I also like to think I bring my common sense with me. If I want to hike from point A to point B and there’s a ravine in the way I don’t just keep walking, I look for a safe route down. A GPS requires the same common sense. I’ve also heard of people trying to use a road that wasn’t finished or open for traffic because their GPS said to go that way. I guess it was included because it was to be finished very soon. Still, it wasn’t at the time. You’d thing a person would know better than to drive through “Road Closed” signs. You can’t protect people from themselves. The extra words of warning are just a precaution by the manufacturer of relieving themselves from some of the responsibility of people who forget their common sense when they drive. wires
