On a GPS, what is the difference between a track and a route?

I am looking to by a handheld GPS for my ATV. And the specs on some say 10 routes and 20 tracks. What is the difference?

    A track is the path you have taken since turning on the GPS unit or starting tracking.

    A route is your pre-planned path or auto-routed path between waypoints.
