Is it legal to install a GPS tracker with audio monitoring in a work truck without informing the driver?

I bought it off of my former boss and I know for a fact it is there. Unfortunatly we aren’t on good terms anymore and I can’t find out where it is. I know they can hide them on your car but this one actually tells him every time the ignition is started. That should narrow it down to a few areas right? This is very important, he has the ability to steal business from me with this.

The driver I have been training with knows the route inside and out, but he’s not very electronic savvy and doesn’t like the GPS idea. He learned it the hard way and thinks I should too. Anyway my boss will allow me to have a GPS does anyone know of a GPS system that I can enter multiple routes and maybe get the quickest way to each route?
