Any suggestions for a GPS for walking in cities and towns?

I’ve looked at the Bushnell backtrack but it has more negative reviews than positive ones.

How to work my gps? I just moved to a new town and it’s getting me lost?

If I purchase a TomTom GPS that come with MapShare, do I ever have to purchase a map upgrade?

Is it that you have to pay for updates with TomTom and then the mapshare makes minor corrections from users?
