Is it a bad idea to buy an older model of a GPS from Garmin?

etrex legend software allowed gps display on computer but upgrades removed this option.How do I get it back?

I used to be able to use my laptop as a BIG screen whilst traveling in vehicle but when new software was added the GPS option on the LHS of computer screen disappeared. Is it possible to restore this feature whilst retaining new software?
