I am prepared to spend about $150 sometime in January. Do certain units come with hiking trails and trail heads programed in? Topographical details?

For driving a Garmin Nuvi 205 is about 180 or so cant remember price but its around there. Garmin also have hand held GPS for hiking. Those are around 200 and up. As far as hiking trails most likely they will not be programmed in the GPS. You will have to buy the software for that. They are called topography maps. Find your local forest and buy that map. They may have regional forest maps too. Good luck. bryson77

If you will except some logic and my opinion, let me suggest a possible modification to your thinking.

First, the units are so inexpensive right now that you may think about specializing and buying 2 instead of one.

Desired features of the unit used when driving would feature: a large display, detailed city map uploads, voice prompts and easy access buttons to reduce the distraction level and allow a higher level of concentration on safe driving. For example, the Tom Tom one 125 is ~$89.00 before taxes at Walmart. This is a very bulky unit because of the large display and easy controls. There are a number of websites that have your local trails and geocache tracks/locations for easy upload.

It would be more desirable to own a more compact unit for hiking with a simple arrow on a compass and a position display in numerical latitude and longitude. For example the Garmin eTrex series is a fit-in-the-palm-of-your-hand with touch screen, 50 or more programmable way-points, trip time, trip distance, 10 or more track logs, computer interface to upload topo maps and weatherproof package. These are available for about the same price as the larger unit in your vehicle.

If you decide on just one, the handheld unit can be hook and loop mounted on your dash-board and has a big enough display to see the arrow well enough when you are driving. Good luck on your decision. TheTinker

    I prefer garmin nuvi,

Garmin nĂ¼vi 285W/285WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic

This is something good I can suggest, currently listed around 46% off, comes under $150.

    # 4.3-inch widescreen touch display lets you view map detail, driving directions, photos, and more in bright, brilliant color
    # Preloaded with detailed 2D and 3D City Navigator NT street maps, with over 6 million points of interest
    # Voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions with spoken street names and HotFix satellite prediction
    # Features Bluetooth wireless technology with a built-in microphone and speaker for hands-free calling

Something more than enough for driving. :) niks

I would go with the Garmin nuvi 710. The Garmin nuvi 710 costs approximately $190 on Amazon, and has an ample set of maps preinstalled. It is a widescreen navigation system that is supposed to be styled ultra thin. The Garmin nuvi 710 is loaded with City Navigator Europe NT, and has detailed directions, Bluetooth for those requiring a hands-free device and real-time traffic alerts. Not only all of that but it looks awesome! .. For more info on it check out the link below Tj
