I recently started hiking and thought that a trail GPS would be something good to invest in. I am now using a Magellan Maestro 3250 but I would like to get one that can do both road ways and hiking. I am also notoriously clumsy so something sturdy and water proof would be nice. Anyone out there use a gps unit that they can recommend?

They are called “Crossover” GPS Units.

Quite frankly I didn’t know they existed until I tried to look for this question. Ticks me off because I recently bought a handheld one for walking hiking, and I found a Crossover model that would have been great in answering this question.

Anyway, look at the Garmin Nuvi 500. I’ve included a link. Price isn’t bad either. More than a either type of unit by itself, but far less than purchasing two of them. Uncle Pennybags

most gps’s maintain the ability to be a quote crossover unquote. you dont have to spend allot of money to get the best gps with the best support. i would recommend that you look at newelectronx gps with amigo on it. very nice – works in the wild while hiking and works on the road. i have the garmin unit and it is hard to see in the sun light, not very good for hiking. the newelectronx unit is a little easier to see, but as with anything with a touch screen, you cant see it in direct sun light without a glare cover.
i get mad at my phone when i try to text in direct sun light lol. any ways hope this helps. Jhonny

I would suggestion these are good Crossover GPS systems :

Magellan 2500T Crossover 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Road and Trail Navigator

Garmin nuvi 500 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Robert M
