L F asked:

I am looking at garmin but they have so many models. Which one is light weight and accurate and gives you turn by turn voice directions?
How accurate are the directions in the Los Angeles area? Basically, southern California.

the garmin nuvi is a great one. it gives you text to speech, or turn by turn. I prefer text to speech because its really hard to look at your gps to find out which way to turn. dont even consider a tom tom. it keeps telling to do a u turn on a high way $_$

Garmin is a best gps system, Garmin has a simple controls – simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, has a turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and more feature.

    I suggestion a Garmin nuvi in an advance model is a 255W, 265WT, 765T.

255W : same as 205W but has text-to-speech (you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. “turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way”, rather than merely “turn left in 50 feet”)), 4.3-Inch diagonal touch screen color display, where am I function, etc.

265WT : has text-to-speech, 4.3-inch diagonal color touchscreen, bluetooth, preloaded Maps with Navteq data of North America + Hawaii + Puerto Rico, free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device), etc.

765T : has text-to-speech, 4.3-Inch diagonal touch screen color display, bluetooth, preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States + Canada + Puerto Rico, lane assist, free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device), multi-destination routing, where am I function, etc. Robert M

All new Garmin nuvi GPS use the same maps, software, etc. They all have the same look and feel. So let’s get the basics:
    1. Get a Garmin 4.3″, not a 3.5″ . (Display size makes a big difference).
    2. Get one that speaks the street names (Text to Speech, models 255 or above)

Having covered those two basics, see what extra options the different models have, and how much they are worth to you. Remember, the GPS will be totally the same and the extra options will be hidden and non existent unless you use them!. Sometimes you can find a model with more features on sale, and cheaper than other simpler models, in which case it would be a no brainer, but don’t pay for it otherwise.

    Best Options:
255W, 255WT (T= free lifetime traffic but as you can guess the service is not that accurate yet)
Best Garmin GPS in the market. They go for about $130 on sale or at ebay. Very accurate (update to 2010 maps and new software for free as soon as you get it by registering it at garmin.com). The screen will be intuitive, spoken street names, display of speed limits on left bottom above actual car’s speed. Simple, efficient. Extras include currency converter, picture viewer, calculator, etc.

265WT the same as 255W plus bluetooth (handsfree calling plus the ability to call by just tapping a POI number, but again, quality is not that good and you probably will not trade it for your own bluetooth)

285WT has the same as 265WT plus MSN Direct is included and not just an option (It provides gas prices, live traffic, weather and movie times) Again, see the price difference and decide if it’s worth it.

750 has a MP3 player but no bluetooth. The main difference here is that this unit has the ability to do multidestination, which the other can’t. This is actually an option you might consider if you usually have many stops to make, but nothing it can’t be work around with the other GPS.

After that, some of the newer models give you the best freeway lane assist (then again, when was the last time knowing which lane to be on was a big concern right?)

    My pick is the 255WT

    Hope it helps Alex
