First, do you know how to use ArcGIS and your GPS unit? If not, I cannot explain it here. ArcGIS is a complicated, non-intuitive application, though it is great.

You will have to decide what you want to depict on your maps. Soils? Crops? Management type? Past yields? Problem areas?

When I map soils, I will bore a hole and record soil features that I find, and take a GPS point. I’m not sure about the Zuno, but with other Trimble units you can input the data with the GPS point you take. Then I will walk about the land, boring holes and describing the soils that I find while continuing to take GPS points.

Later, I’ll upload the points from my GPS unit to my computer, and open them in an ArcMap project. I can then construct map units based on those points and my knowledge of soils and the landscape that I have just inspected. These map units are saved as a shapefile.

You are embarking on a complicated endeavor. If you have never made a map, you have a lot of work to do. If you’ve never used ArcGIS, you have a lot of work to do. If you have never used a GPS unit, you have a little work to do. I really don’t know where to begin without knowing your background and capabilities. Soilguy
