Generally it's easier for the GPS to have it's own battery rather than having to connect into the car electronics. If nothing else most off the shelf products will use their own batteries because the manufacturers don't want the liability of people re-wiring their cars. Hooking up to the car battery is easy enough if you know what you are doing. Secondly a GPS alone won't solve your problem. A GPS system knows where it is but on it's own it has no way of getting that information back to your home computer. You need some sort of data connection between the GPS and your computer (or the internet). Generally that means a cellular modem which in turn means a monthly subscription. Once you accept that anything you find will have a battery and a monthly subscription then googling for GPS trackers should find you a lot of options.
